O'Brien DC, et al. - In this Pilot, prospective efficacy trial, investigators examined the potency of transdermal lidocaine in chronic subjective tinnitus as measured by the Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI) at tertiary care hospital among cases with chronic subjective tinnitus for >6 months. The average pre-treatment TFI score was 56.2 which declined to 41 after 1 month. They also noticed a decrease in the scores to 34 and 35 after 2 and 3 months of treatment, respectively. They also found discontinuation of the therapy due to the size, discomfort, and appearance of the lidocaine patch, failure to follow-up and lack of seen benefit from treatment. But, they considered 5% transdermal lidocaine, a potential remedy for chronic subjective tinnitus. As most of the cases who finished 1 month of treatment were noticed with clinically significant improvement in tinnitus.
