Sheth M, et al. - Researchers used the Multiparameter Intelligent Monitoring in Intensive Care III database (v. 1.4) to compare outcomes—especially 30-day mortality risk—between sepsis patients with autoimmune diseases and sepsis patients without these comorbidities. Known confounders, including demographics, disease severity, and immunomodulation medications were controlled via logistic regression models. They also assessed the impact of chronic use of immunomodulation medications on the link between autoimmune disease and 30-day mortality in mediation analysis. Findings revealed a lower 30-day mortality risk in sepsis in relation to autoimmune diseases. A mechanism that was not related to the chronic use of immunomodulation medications was responsible for the observed impact of autoimmune diseases on 30-day mortality.
