Antibacterial envelope to prevent cardiac implantable device infection
New England Journal of Medicine Mar 22, 2019
Tarakji KG, et al. - In this randomized, controlled clinical trial with 6,983 patients, researchers assessed an absorbable, antibiotic-eluting envelope for safety and effectiveness in lowering the incidence of infection related to cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) implantations. Findings revealed that using an antibacterial envelope as an adjunct led to a significantly reduced (40%) incidence of major CIED infections vs standard-of-care infection-prevention strategies alone. Patients receiving the envelope had no more complications related to the procedure or system than those not receiving the envelope.
