Effect of catheter ablation vs antiarrhythmic drug therapy on mortality, stroke, bleeding, and cardiac arrest among patients with atrial fibrillation: The CABANA randomized clinical trial
JAMA Mar 22, 2019
Packer DL, et al. - In this trial involving 2,204 patients with atrial fibrillation, researchers ascertained if catheter ablation is more effective in improving outcomes in atrial fibrillation (AF) than conventional medical therapy. Death, disabling stroke, serious bleeding, or cardiac arrest comprised the primary endpoint. According to findings, catheter ablation strategy did not significantly reduce the primary composite endpoint among patients with vs medical therapy. However, lower-than-expected event rates and treatment crossovers were affected by the estimated treatment effect of catheter ablation, which should be considered when interpreting test results. Although rare, pericardial effusion with tamponade was the most common adverse event in catheter ablation patients.
