A metabolic screen in adolescents reveals an association between circulating citrate and cortical bone mineral density

Kemp JP, et al. - In adolescents, insulin and adiponectin levels are linked to cortical bone size, which infers factors linked to fat metabolism directly influence skeletal development, so researchers analyzed connections between a metabolic screen concentrating on fat metabolism and peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) measures of the mid-tibia in 15-year-olds from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. To examine associations between metabolic measures and periosteal circumference (PC), cortical thickness (CT), and cortical bone mineral density (BMDC), ordinary least squares linear regression was used. In this investigation involving 1,121 subjects, the authors concluded that circulating levels of citrate were inversely related to BMDC and positively related to PC in adolescents, reflecting associations with higher bone turnover.
