Peripheral blood metabolite profiles associated with new onset atrial fibrillation

American Heart Journal Mar 22, 2019

Harskamp RE, et al. - Researchers investigated if peripheral blood metabolite profiles are related to new onset atrial fibrillation (AF) in 1,892 patients without AF at baseline in this study. These subjects completed assessments for the determination of levels of 69 metabolites during coronary angiography. The investigators assessed the link of 13 uncorrelated metabolite factors with new occurrences of AF via Cox proportional hazards models. Participants were followed-up for a median duration of 2.8 years. Findings revealed the associations of principal components analysis (PCA) factor 1 (medium chain acylcarnitines), factor 2 (short chain dicarboxylacylcarnitines), and factor 5 (long chain acylcarnitines) with new onset AF following adjustment. Overall, patients referred for coronary angiography exhibited a link between metabolite profiles and new onset AF.
