Effects of fibrinogen and platelet transfusion on coagulation and platelet function in bleeding cardiac surgery patients

Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Mar 21, 2019

Hakimi CS, et al. - In this observational study, researchers determined the functional impacts of fibrinogen and platelet concentrate transfusion on coagulation and platelet function in 42 patients with ongoing bleeding after cardiac surgery. An increase in fibrinogen concentration and clot stability were seen as consequences of fibrinogen infusion, however, it failed to influence platelet aggregation. An improvement in arachidonic acid- and TRAP-induced platelet aggregation and an increase in platelet count were evident in relation to platelet transfusion, which had no remarkable influence on coagulation. The outcomes of combined fibrinogen and platelet transfusion were shortened clotting time and increased clot stability, improved arachidonic acid- and TRAP-induced platelet aggregation, and increased fibrinogen concentration and platelet count. In the studied patient population, fibrinogen and platelet transfusion resulted in improved coagulation and platelet function.
