Rizvi ZH, et al. - A total of 8546 cases were estimated to study the etiology, timing, and costs surrounding unplanned 30-day readmissions after transsphenoidal pituitary surgery. Investigators noticed 742 subjects experiencing at least 1 unplanned readmission within 30 days of the index admission. They reported hypertension, hypothyroidism, diabetes, and obesity, the most common comorbidities among readmitted subjects. They noted the most frequent cause of readmission: nervous system complications, followed by neurohypophyseal or electrolyte disorders, cerebrospinal fluid leak, hemorrhage, and meningitis. They found that fluid as well as electrolyte disorders and neurologic disease (most commonly epilepsy or convulsions) presented on initial admission, were the predicting factors of the length of initial stay and readmission. They recorded the median readmission cost of $7723 and expected to occur within 7 days.
