Contemporary prevalence of gout and hyperuricemia in the United States and decadal trends: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2016

Chen-Xu M, et al. - Researchers assessed the prevalence of gout and hyperuricemia in the US and decadal trends using data from 5,467 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2015-2016. They noted 3.9% (9.2 million) as the prevalence of gout among US adults. Hyperuricemia prevalence of 20.2% among males and 20.0% among females were noted with mean serum urate levels of 6.0 mg/dL and 4.8 mg/dL, respectively. Stable prevalence of gout and hyperuricemia were observed over the past decade, but only a third of gout patients received urate-lowering therapy.
