Gandelman JS, et al. - In this study, researchers studied 1,044 systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and 5,241 controls to examine the incidence and factors linked to resistant hypertension (RHTN) in SLE. They observed nearly twice the prevalence of RHTN in SLE cases vs controls (10.2% and 5.3%, respectively); the incidence rate is 10.2 vs 6.1 cases/1,000 person-years of observation. They reported an association between RHTN and black race, lower renal function, hypercholesterolemia, and increased inflammatory markers in those with SLE. After adjustment for age, sex, race, calendar year, creatinine, baseline ESRD, and the number of visits, they concluded a correlation between RHTN and significantly higher mortality risk.
