Association of acute myocardial infarction cardiac arrest patient volume and in-hospital mortality in the United States: Insights from the National Cardiovascular Data Registry Acute Coronary Treatment And Intervention Outcomes Network Registry

Clinical Cardiology Mar 20, 2019

Kontos MC, et al. – Researchers investigated the potential association of increased hospital myocardial infarction (MI) mortality with out of hospital cardiac arrest patient volume via analysis of the Acute Coronary Treatment Intervention Outcomes Network Registry. The study sample consisted of 252,882 patients from 224 hospitals, of whom 9,682 (3.8%) had cardiac arrest (1.6% of non-ST elevation MI [NSTEMI] and 7.5% of ST elevation MI [STEMI] patients). Researchers assessed hospital variation of cardiac arrest, and the temporal trend of the proportion of cardiac arrest MI patients. Findings revealed a low proportion of MI patients who had cardiac arrest. Across hospitals that had increased proportions of cardiac arrest MI patients, no remarkable difference was noted with respect to in-hospital mortality among all MI patients. As a result of treating cardiac arrest patients with MI, an adverse impact on overall MI mortality was unlikely, for most hospitals.
