Metformin attenuates the postprandial fall in blood pressure in type 2 diabetes

Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Mar 20, 2019

Borg MJ, et al. - In this double-blind, randomized, crossover design, researchers investigated the acute consequences of metformin on blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) in response to oral glucose in outpatients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Candidates were given either metformin 1 g or saline (control) intraduodenally 60 minutes before ingesting a 50 g glucose drink labeled with 150 mg 13C-acetate. They observed a decline in systolic as well as diastolic BP with an increase in HR after oral glucose on two occasions. They also found reduction of the fall in systolic BP and an increase in plasma glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) concentrations due to metformin. It also caused slow down the gastric emptying without significantly influencing the diastolic BP or HR.
