Postoperative pain and analgesic requirements after septoplasty and rhinoplasty

The Laryngoscope Mar 17, 2019

Sclafani AP, et al. - In this Prospective outcomes research, to evaluate the level of pain after rhinoplasty and septoplasty and also to determine the strength and quantity of postoperative opioids required, researchers estimated 2 groups of candidates viz, one group who underwent septoplasty with/without turbinate reduction and the other who underwent functional and/or cosmetic rhinoplasty (with/without septoplasty). They reported moderate average pain through the postoperative day (POD) 2 after rhinoplasty and on POD 0 after septoplasty. They observed a comparable number of opioid tablets consumed or total MMEs used between two groups. They suggested the probability to reduce opioid prescription reliably after septoplasty and rhinoplasty to as less as 11 tablets as it could decrease the availability of opioids for misuse/diversion without any adverse effect.
