Inflammatory potential of monospecies biofilm matrix components

International Endodontic Journal Mar 15, 2019

Ramirez T, et al. - Investigators in this study researched the data to explore the impact of biofilm matrix elements of Enterococcus faecalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa monospecies biofilms on macrophages. They noted an association of extracted exopolysaccharides (EPS) from both biofilm strains with higher levels than extracellular DNA (eDNA) in both growth conditions. They noted lower inflammatory potential in the biofilm components as compared to planktonic bacteria and LPS. They found higher levels of the inflammatory response due to EPS in comparison with eDNA for both strains. They found no deviation for E. faecalis EPS due to nitric oxide (NO) in the presence of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α). Conversely, they observed significant levels of IL-6 as compared to TNF-α and NO in P. aeruginosa EPS and eDNA.
