A randomized, controlled, clinical study on a new titanium oxide abutment surface for improved healing and soft tissue health

Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research Mar 15, 2019

Hall J, et al. - In this study, the authors analyzed the data to assess the impact of abutments with the anodized surface on healing and soft tissue health. They did not observe any significant differences in biofilm formation between test and control abutments. They also found lesser soft tissue bleeding upon abutment removal for test abutments vs control abutments at 6 weeks. At the 6-week, 6-month, and 2-year follow-ups, keratinized mucosa height was recorded significantly greater at test abutments when compared with control abutments. Overall, they demonstrated no impact of machined titanium surface on bacterial colonization and proteolytic activity but were associated with greater soft tissue outcomes, suggesting improved surface-dependent peri-implant healing and soft tissue health.
