Prezelin-Reydit M, et al. - Researchers assessed the hazard of graft failure (defined as death, return to dialysis or retransplant whichever occurred first) in relation to preemptive kidney transplantation (KT) [PKT] and in relation to pretransplant dialysis time. A total of 22,345 adults with first kidney-only transplants performed between 2002 and 2012 in France were included; 61.9% of the study population were men. The mean ± SD age at KT was 50.5 ± 13.4 years and a PKT was reported in 3112 (14.0%). Up to December 2013, the occurrence of graft failure was reported in 4952 patients. A lower risk of graft failure was observed in relation to PKT vs KT performed after the initiation of dialysis, whatever the duration of dialysis. This was observed following adjustment for recipients’ age and sex, primary kidney disease, donor type (living or deceased donor, expanded criteria donor), HLA mismatches, cold ischaemia time, centre and year of transplantation.
