Approach-based comparative and predictor analysis of 30-day readmission, reoperation, and morbidity in patients undergoing lumbar interbody fusion using the ACS-NSQIP dataset

Spine Mar 10, 2019

Katz AD, et al. - Researchers examined 26,336 patients to evaluate the diversity in 30-day readmission, reoperation, and morbidity for subjects undergoing either posterior/transforaminal (PLIF/TLIF) and anterior/lateral (ALIF/LLIF) lumbar interbody fusion using multivariate regression. They observed inclination of increasing age towards readmission in ALIF/LLIF whereas increased white cell count, dyspnea, and COPD in PLIF/TLIF. They predicted morbidity with factors like age, hospital stay, reduced hematocrit, dyspnea, ASA-class ≥3, posterolateral fusion, and revision surgery and, in PLIF/TLIF, bleeding disorder in both groups. They noted inclination of the female gender, diabetes, COPD, and disseminated cancer towards morbidity in PLIF/TLIF whereas obesity trended in PLIF/TLIF and ALIF/LLIF. They concluded the prediction of poorer 30-day outcomes with older age, higher ASA-class, and specific comorbidities.
