Comparison of non-routine healthcare utilization in the 2 years following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy: A cohort study

Obesity Surgery Mar 10, 2019

Seip RL, et al. - Given that patients undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) differ from sleeve gastrectomy (SG) in healthcare needs after surgery, researchers sought to determine non-routine healthcare utilization after RYGB vs SG. They identified a total of 258 and 461 patients who underwent primary RYGB and SG, respectively, at a Bariatric Surgery Comprehensive Center between March 2013 and April 2015. Compared to SG, RYGB was associated with twice as many non-routine follow-up visits and 1.6 times greater use of healthcare services. The greatest differences were noted in computer-assisted tomography imaging and endoscopies. Between 1 and 6 months following surgery, they observed peak healthcare utilization for RYGB.
