Explaining the association between anxiety disorders and alcohol use disorder: A twin study

Depression and Anxiety Mar 10, 2019

Torvik FA, et al. - Among 2801 adult Norwegian twins, researchers analyzed to evaluate the association of social anxiety disorder (SAD) with alcohol use disorder (AUD) along with the progression of the relationship with time. Using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview, they observed the diagnoses of AUD, SAD, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia, and specific phobias as well. They recorded a relationship between SAD and AUD but not with other anxiety disorders. Although, AUD was linked to an insignificantly raised risk of later anxiety disorders except for SAD. Hence, they suggested interventions preventing or treating SAD due to an extra advantage of limiting AUD. But, interventions intending other anxiety disorders had no such subsequent influence on AUD.
