Gonorrhoea and chlamydia diagnosis as an entry point for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis: A modelling study
BMJ Open Mar 08, 2019
Kasaie P, et al. - In this investigation, researchers quantified the added value of targeting pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to men who have sex with men (MSM) who are infected with Neisseria gonorrhoeae/Chlamydia trachomatis (NG/CT) in terms of population-level impact over time on disease incidence. The implementation of PrEP has been modelled under three alternative scenarios: PrEP delivery at NG/CT diagnosis (targeted delivery), PrEP evaluation at NG/CT screening/testing, and PrEP evaluation in the general community (untargeted). Findings revealed that targeting MSM infected with NG/CT increases the efficiency and effectiveness of PrEP delivery. The diagnosis of NG/CT can be a highly effective entry point for PrEP initialization if high levels of sexually transmitted infection screening can be achieved at the community level.
