May TL, et al. - Via evaluating the International Cardiac Arrest Registry (INTCAR) of patients admitted to hospitals after resuscitation from cardiac arrest (CA), researchers sought to assess predictors of “early” withdrawal of life support therapies (eWLST) and determine its impact on outcomes. They analyzed data of 2688 patients from 24 hospitals and identified 1162 (43%) cases who underwent withdrawal of life support; 459 (17%) of these were classified as eWLST indicating a frequent occurrence of early withdrawal of life support after cardiac arrest. eWLST was observed in independent correlation with older age, initial non-shockable rhythm, increased ischemic time, shock on admission, out-of-hospital arrest, and admission in the United States. Death was reported for all patients with eWLST, while in the matched cohort, 21% of patients displayed a good outcome.
