Active surveillance and watchful waiting for low-risk prostate cancer in Black patients: A population-based analysis

Journal of Clinical Oncology Mar 07, 2019

Butler S, et al. - Researchers used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program Prostate with Active Surveillance/Watchful Waiting (AS/WW) Database to analyze the conservative management utilization rates for 5,218 black men with low-risk prostate cancer (LRPC) in the US. By race (black vs non-black) and number of positive biopsy cores (≤2 vs ≥3), they studied trends in AS/WW utilization over time. According to the findings, from 2010-2015, AS/WW utilization rates have nearly tripled for black men, with increases among black men vs non-black men ranging from 12.6% to 36.4% vs 14.8% to 43.3% during this period. Findings from this report with the largest US population of black LRPC patients with quality assured AS/WW data highlighted that AS/WW was considered a safe management option in all races.
