Association between health behaviors and mood disorders among the elderly: A community-based cohort study

BMC Geriatrics Mar 06, 2019

Tseng TJ, et al. - Via applying the Taipei City Elderly Health Examination Database, researchers identified the prevalence of mental disorders among the elderly (aged 65 and older) people in Taipei City and illustrated risk factors contributing to mental disorders. A total of 86,061 people, with 348,067 visits, were subject to publicly funded health examinations. Findings revealed that male, higher education, no long-term medication, and three or more weekly exercises were all positively associated with improved emotional status. Though, being divorced, not drinking milk, not eating enough vegetables and fruits every day, daily smoking, and having more chronic diseases were all related to poor mental status among the elderly. Investigators suggested that this investigation could both estimate the prevalence of community-level mood disorders and identify risk factors for personal level mood disorders. They advised that health policymakers should focus on reducing the risk factors for elderly people developing mood disorders.
