Dietary insulin load and cancer recurrence and survival in patients with stage III colon cancer: Findings from CALGB 89803 (Alliance)

Journal of the National Cancer Institute Mar 06, 2019

Morales-Oyarvide V, et al. - Researchers performed a prospective observational study consisting of 1,023 patients with resected stage III colon cancer enrolled in an adjuvant chemotherapy trial who reported dietary intake halfway through and 6 months after chemotherapy to determine how postdiagnosis dietary insulin load and dietary insulin index affect stage III colon cancer outcomes. In all, they noted a statistically significant association of high dietary insulin load with worse disease-free survival. In addition, recurrence and mortality risks were found to be higher for patients with resected stage III colon cancer who consumed a high-insulinogenic diet. The importance of dietary management following resection of colon cancer was, thus, emphasized.
