N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide levels had an independent and added ability in the evaluation of all-cause mortality in older Chinese patients with atrial fibrillation

BMC Geriatrics Mar 06, 2019

Fu S, et al. - Researchers ascertained if N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels significantly improved the evaluation of all-cause mortality in older Chinese patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common arrhythmia, when added to CHADS2 and CHA2DS2VASc scores. In order to determine the variables independently associated with all-cause mortality, Cox regression analysis was applied. Data reported that the median age was 85 years and all-cause mortality was 24.2%. In this study involving 219 older patients with AF, NT-proBNP levels were an independent biomarker related to increased all-cause mortality in older Chinese AF patients and had an independent and additional ability to assess their all-cause mortality compared to CHADS2 and CHA2DS2VASc.
