Risk of incident dementia according to metabolic health and obesity status in late-life: A population-based cohort study

Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Mar 06, 2019

Lee JY, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers assessed the correlation between late-life metabolic health, obesity status, and risk of incident dementia. Participants in the study included nearly 12.3 million adults aged > 50 years who had health examinations from 2009 to 2012 and were dementia-free at baseline. According to findings, all metabolic syndrome components, with the exception of obesity, significantly increased the risk of dementia, and these associations were more pronounced in vascular dementia (VaD). Specifically, being underweight significantly raised the risk of dementia. Furthermore, metabolically healthy obese phenotype in late life showed a reduced risk of overall dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, but not VaD.
