Acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. As per the National Health Portal of India, there were 41,996,260 cases and 3,740 deaths from respiratory infections in India in 2018.

Upper respiratory infections (URI) including nasopharyngitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis and otitis media account for 87.5% of the total episodes of respiratory infections. They are the most common and frequently occurring infections in children.
