ADA makes its presence known at CVS stores, website

American Dental Association News Jun 01, 2018

Customers visiting CVS Pharmacy—particularly the oral health aisle—may see the signs: “Need a replacement? Every 3-4 months replace your toothbrush to clean effectively.”

Another reads: “More than just fresh breath. Mouthrinses can help prevent cavities or gum disease.”

The signs then prompt the customer to consider products that have received the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

The signage is part of a 3-year initiative with CVS Pharmacy that gives the ADA a continuous in-store and digital presence to help put millions of dental patients on a path to better overall heath. The goal: to make it easier for the public—and potential/current patients—to achieve better oral health.

About 4 months after the initiative was announced in January, the ADA’s presence at CVS Pharmacy is becoming more prominent in-store and online.

Signage providing CVS Pharmacy customers with credible oral health information is officially up in more than 5,000 locations. The signs will remain in-store through March 2019. CVS has 7,900 retail locations nationwide.

In addition, CVS Pharmacy launched a microsite, CVS.com/ADAdental, in early May to help shoppers both find ADA Seal products sold at CVS and look for a dentist nearby through the ADA Find-a-Dentist online search tool.

ADA videos and articles promoting oral health information and tips are also featured on the webpage, with seasonal content updated quarterly.

CVS Pharmacy’s May circular, which had a 40 million circulation, included a full page with tips on replacing toothbrushes this spring while promoting Find-a-Dentist, an online search tool that allows potential patients to easily find an ADA dentist in their area, and ADA Seal products.

“What’s exciting about this latest phase of this collaboration is that we are steadily making it easier for the public to access information about oral health, whether by reading information about the ADA Seal of Acceptance on store shelves, accessing Find-a-Dentist online, seeing oral health tips in circular ads, or watching videos on CVS.com,” said Dr. Joseph P. Crowley, ADA president. “The recently launched website has made it easier than ever for shoppers to find ADA Seal of Acceptance products sold at CVS and to search for ADA member dentists at the same time.”

A core component of the initiative is to give premium placement and promotion of dental care products—from mouthrinses, toothbrushes, toothpastes, floss/interdental cleaners, and sugar-free gum—that have received the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Consumer dental products that earn the Seal have undergone ADA scrutiny, with extensive review of data from clinical and/or laboratory studies to ensure the company’s therapeutic claims are legitimate. The ADA Seal program requirements are consistent with current ADA and American National Standards Institute-approved standards.

Themed programs to connect oral health with specific seasons, holidays, and health awareness months will continue over the next 3 years. Later this year, CVS Pharmacy and the Association will collaborate in September for CVS Oral Health Month.
