Subbrow blepharoplasty technique offers good cosmetic outcomes in Asian women

American Academy of Ophthalmology News Dec 12, 2019

In this study, the authors describe the effectiveness of a technique to revive the natural eyelid shape and alleviate periorbital wrinkles in Asian women.

Study design

This was a retrospective case study review of 66 patients undergoing modified subbrow blepharoplasty combined with periorbital muscle manipulation. At 6 months, patients were evaluated for scarring, forehead numbness, modification of crow’s feet and glabellar frown lines and satisfaction.

Outcomes

Scarring was reported to be minimal. Thirteen patients (19.6%) had forehead numbness which resolved within 6 months, all had improvement in periorbital rhytids, and typical swelling was 1 to 3 months. In addition, there was a high patient satisfaction with the improvement of lateral hooding (95.4%) and brow position (90.9%).

Limitations

This study was limited by its retrospective design and small sample size.

Clinical significance

Consider subbrow blepharoplasty with muscle manipulation for addressing aging changes in Asian patients. If performed properly, the technique can stabilize brows and improve periorbital rhytids with minimal scarring while preserving the Asian eyelid configuration.
