Acromegalic arthropathy in various stages of the disease: A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) study
European Journal of Endocrinology Apr 06, 2017
Claessen KMHA, et al. – Researchers intended to define cartilage and bone abnormalities correlated with acromegalic arthropathy using Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging. The results suggested that patients with active acromegaly have a high prevalence of structural osteoarthritis abnormalities in combination with thick joint cartilage. Moreover, T2 relaxation times of cartilage are high in active patients, demonstrating unhealthy cartilage with increased water content, which is reversible by adequate treatment. Remarkably, patients with acromegaly have a different distribution of structural osteoarthritis abnormalities visualized by MRI than primary osteoarthritis subjects, especially of cartilage defects.
