PGIMER doctors fear misuse of potent opioid after Indore drug bust
Times of India Nov 21, 2018
Doctors at PGIMER's drug rehab centre are now worried about a sudden spike in addicts at their centre after a major drug bust at an Indore unit that was illegally manufacturing Fentanyl, a potent opioid prescription drug made news last week.
Fentanyl is extremely potent, 80 to 100 stronger than morphine and 50 times stronger than heroin. It is commonly prescribed as a pain reliever to cancer patients. Doctors at PGIMER are concerned that the drug bust will cause the opioid to make its way into the drug market in Punjab as a large number of addicts like to experiment with new drugs. Punjab currently records the highest percentage (0.84% compared 0.7% across India) of opioid dependants in the country, according to a 2016 study by AIIMS.
