Over 30 youngsters sustain eye injury during Deepavali

Despite less enthusiasm to burst crackers across Karnataka, at least more than 30 youngsters have been admitted to hospitals in the city with eye injuries for not taking precautions while celebrating the festival.

 

 

 

Official sources said at least 30 persons including 25 minors were admitted to government run Minto hospital, Narayana Netralaya and other eye hospitals in the city. There would be other patients going to other eye clinics in the city complaining of injuries and we will come up with final figures tomorrow, a health official of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike said. Among those who were injured is 8-year-old Bhavesh who sustained serious injury on both eyes and he is likely to lose full sight on his left eye, Minto hospital doctors said. He was seen holding both his hands against his young father, with both his eyes covered in bandage, hospital PRO Venkatesh said.

Health experts however said the patients coming to eye hospitals this year had a drastic fall after educational programmes against ills of bustring crackers without enough precautions was propagated by various agencies. Health officials said there was several other incidents coming into the hospitals with young complaining of eye injuries and they have all been attended to. Most of them would regain their eyesight but for a few who have sustained series injuries in one eye.

The Deepavali celebration was across the sects as, in another case, N R Nagar resident Sharukh (22) sustained injury in the left eye and he would regain eyesight, doctors said. Dr Uma of Narayana Netralaya said eye was the most treasured organ of a human body and any damage should be brought to the attention of a expert doctor. Apart from bursting crackers and injuring the eye, people of all ages should take care of their eyes and those with status of diabetes should be the first to check with the health of their eyesight. ''Young despite a minor injury in the eye can recover, but there are more serious ailments among the older population that the eye experts like me are looking to serve. They should come to us if there was any problem with the eyesight,'' she said.
