Impact of bariatric surgery on outcomes of patients with sickle cell disease: A nationwide inpatient sample analysis, 2004–2014

Obesity Surgery Feb 28, 2019

Sharma P, et al. - Researchers sought to determine how bariatric surgery influences clinical outcomes among hospitalized obese patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). They identified 2,549 patients with a discharge diagnosis of SCD and morbid obesity by querying the United States Nationwide Inpatient Sample database between 2004 and 2014. Among these, only 42 patients (1.7%) had bariatric surgery. Morbidly obese sickle cell patients may display decreased risk of vaso-occlusive crises in correlation with undergoing bariatric surgery, but no significant influence on mortality and other adverse outcomes were seen. Still, underutilization of these weight loss surgeries was observed in these patients.
