The association of short-term ultraviolet radiation exposure and disease severity in juvenile dermatomyositis

Arthritis Care & Research Feb 07, 2019

Neely J, et al. - In this cross-sectional study involving individuals with juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) enrolled in the US multicenter Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA) registry from 2010 to 2015, investigators examined the relationship between ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and severe disease consequences in JDM. They found no correlation between the mean UV index (mUVI) and calcinosis. They also noted black race was associated with a threefold higher odds of calcinosis; however, a significant statistical interaction between race and UVI was also evident. Overall, they found that higher mUVI was linked to reduced odds of using biologics or non-methotrexate DMARDs and skin ulceration.
