The FSHB -211 G>T polymorphism as predictor for TESE success in patients with unexplained azoospermia

Busch AS, et al. - In view of the vital role follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) has in spermatogenesis, researchers intended to describe the impact of three common genetic variants affecting FSH and its cognate receptor on testicular histopathology patterns and sperm retrieval rate (SRR) in testicular sperm extraction (TESE). In azoospermic patients, they assessed the correlations of the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) FSHB -211G>T (rs10835638), FSHR -29G>A (rs1394205) as well as FSHR c.2039A>G (rs6166) with testicular histopathology and SRR. Study participants were 1,075 men presenting with azoospermia that underwent TESE. Investigators show for the first time patients with unexplained azoospermia have a significant association of FSHB -211G>T with reduced chances of sperm retrieval. A calculator/score with the non-invasive parameters FSH, testicular volume and FSHB haplotype should be assed to estimate the chances of sperm retrieval in azoospermic men.
