Association of state Medicaid expansion with quality of care and outcomes for low-income patients hospitalized with acute myocardial infarction

JAMA Jan 21, 2019

Wadhera RK, et al. – Researchers conducted this retrospective cohort study (January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2016) at hospitals participating in the in National Cardiovascular Data Registry Acute Coronary Treatment and Intervention Outcomes Network Registry to examine the impact of rates of uninsurance, quality of care, and outcomes among individuals hospitalized for acute myocardial infarction (AMI; n=325,343) 3 years after states elected to expand Medicaid compared with nonexpansion states. Overall, they found that state Medicaid expansion was linked to a significant reduction in rates of uninsurance among patients hospitalized for AMI. Furthermore, they found no improvement in in-hospital quality of care or mortality vs nonexpansion states among low-income patients.
