Preoperative malnutrition negatively correlates with postoperative wound complications and infection following total joint arthroplasty: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of Arthroplasty Jan 14, 2019
Gu A, et al. - In this study, researchers performed a systematic literature review to estimate the association of preoperative malnutrition with postoperative wound complications and infection following total joint arthroplasty. They recognized albumin as a marker for malnutrition among all 20 studies whereas transferrin was noted as a marker in about 30% of studies. Candidates with an albumin <3.5 dg/l were found to be more prone to develop a postoperative wound complication. Overall, they saw a strong association of preoperative serologic markers of malnutrition with worse postoperative consequences across all total joint replacement interventions.
