Proton pump inhibitors and risk of hip fracture: A meta-analysis of observational studies

Osteoporosis International Dec 16, 2018

Poly TN, et al. - Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of relevant studies to quantify the magnitude of the relationship between proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and risk of hip fracture. Relevant articles were identified via search of the MEDLINE, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and Web of Science databases, which were collected from January 1, 1990, to March 31, 2018. They noted a significant correlation of PPI use with increased risk of hip fracture development, which is not observed in H2RA exposure. Hence, they recommended caution for physicians when considering a long-term PPI treatment to their patients who already have an elevated risk of hip fracture, and indicated that patients should be concerned regarding the inappropriate use of PPIs. These patients should only continue to receive PPIs, if necessary, and with clear indication.
