Mortality after emergency treatment of colorectal cancer and associated risk factors—A nationwide cohort study

International Journal of Colorectal Disease Oct 19, 2018

Degett TH, et al. - Using data from the Danish Colorectal Cancer Group database and National Patient Registry, a nationwide and population-based cohort study was conducted to explore whether postoperative mortality following acute surgical treatment of colorectal cancer has declined in Denmark and as well as the risk factors related to early death. Participants in the study were 6,147 patients. From 2005 to 2015, the 90-day postoperative mortality from acute colorectal surgery has improved in Denmark. However, data revealed that nearly one out of four patients undergoing acute surgery for colorectal cancer dies within 90 days. Increasing age, the presence of comorbidity, and stage IV disease were factors related to postoperative mortality.
