Impaired sleep is associated with low testosterone in US adult males: Results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

World Journal of Urology Sep 20, 2018

Patel P, et al. - Authors evaluated the impact of self-reported sleep patterns on serum testosterone while controlling for co-morbidities and baseline demographics. Findings suggested an association of increasing age, impaired sleep, and elevated BMI with low testosterone among men aged 16–80 in the US, so improving sleep duration combined with weight management should be part of evaluating and treating reduced serum testosterone. Serum testosterone was found to decrease by 0.49 ng/dL per year of age, 5.85 ng/dL per hour loss of sleep, and 6.18 ng/dL per unit of body mass index increase, as seen on the multivariate linear regression.
