Sexuality and cognitive status: A U.S. nationally representative study of home-dwelling older adults

Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Sep 18, 2018

Lindau ST, et al. - Using data from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project, researchers determined patterns and prevalence of sexual behavior, problems, and attitudes in individuals with different cognitive status: normal, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia. Researchers found that many home-dwelling men and women with dementia were sexually active and that the rate of sexual function problems was high across gender and cognitive groups (77%). They also reported that the majority of people were having sex less frequently than they might want and that few men (17%) or women (1%) with dementia conversed with a specialist about sex.
