Prevalence and characteristics of moderate to severe pain among hospitalized older adults

Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Aug 17, 2018

Deng LX, et al. - Researchers determined the prevalence, characteristics, and management of pain in older hospitalized medical patients. They performed medical record aggregate review for individuals aged 65 and older admitted to the medicine service between November 28, 2014 and May 28, 2015 in a tertiary care hospital. Moderate to severe pain was reported in 20% of older adults admitted. Opioids (80%) and acetaminophen (74%) were prescribed for most participants during hospitalization; few received nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (9%). Compared to those without a history of chronic pain, participants with chronic pain had less reduction in pain intensity score from admission to discharge and were more likely to receive opioids, adjuvant analgesics, and other analgesics.
