Burden of depressive symptoms over 2 decades and risk of nursing home placement in older women
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Aug 17, 2018
Byers AL, et al. - Researchers used a prospective cohort study design with data linked to Medicare claims files to find out the link between cumulative burden of depressive symptoms and nursing home (NH) placement risk over 2 decades. Participants were community-dwelling women aged 65 and older (N=3,646). They observed a greater risk of NH placement in older women with a cumulative burden of depressive symptoms over nearly 2 decades, regardless of recent depression exposure, medical comorbidities, functional impairment, and the competing risk of death. Findings call for improving recognition, monitoring, and treatment of depressive symptoms early, which may reduce or delay NH placement.
