Gray matter bases of psychotic features in adult bipolar disorder: A systematic review and voxel-based meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies

Human Brain Mapping Aug 17, 2018

Wang X, et al. - Via a systematic review based on the gray matter volume (GMV) among psychotic bipolar disorder (P-BD) and nonpsychotic bipolar disorder (NP-BD) patients and healthy controls (HC), researchers explored the neuroanatomical bases of psychotic dimension in bipolar disorder (BD). They also used a whole-brain imaging approach in a meta-analysis of GMV differences between P-BD patients and HC. Both qualitatively and quantitatively, smaller GMVs mainly in the prefronto-temporal and cingulate cortices, the precentral gyrus, and insula, were detected in P-BD patients vs HC. Also, the higher proportions of female patients and patients taking psychotropic medication in P-BD and P-BD type I were found to be related to smaller GMV in the right precentral gyrus, and the right insula, respectively. Psychotic dimension must be distinguished in neuroimaging studies of BD.
