Patient factors associated with sperm cryopreservation among at-risk adolescents newly diagnosed with cancer

Cancer Jul 11, 2018

Klosky JL, et al. - Researchers investigated patient factors associated with sperm cryopreservation among at-risk adolescents newly diagnosed with cancer in this cross-sectional study. They found that factors associated with collection attempts included adolescents' perceived benefits of sperm banking, higher Tanner stage, and parent recommendation, whereas this likelihood was decreased by perceived social barriers. Greater adolescent self-efficacy, parent and provider recommendation to bank, and consultation with a fertility specialist constituted the factors with which an association of successful banking was observed. Recommendations included consultation with both adolescents and parents regarding fertility preservation and implementation of tailored interventions to address barriers to sperm banking while promoting its benefits.
