Impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on patients with migraine: A web-based survey study

The Journal of Headache and Pain Sep 29, 2020

Al-Hashel JY, et al. - Researchers examined how COVID-19 pandemic influenced migraine patients in “real-world” setting. In addition, they sought the risk factors for poor outcome. A sample of 1,018 patients with migraine recruited from headache clinic registry and via social media responded to an anonymous survey administered online; the survey included demographic, migraine-related, COVID-19-specific and overall psychosocial variables. Analysis revealed an overall negative impact of COVID-19 pandemic on patients with migraine. Increase in migraine frequency and severity was reported in more than half of the respondents, in comparison to pre-pandemic period. This was understandably accompanied by excess use of analgesics and acute migraine therapies, however, ED visit for acute management was reported in only 22.5%, probably for fear of contracting the virus.
