Levels and change in galectin‐3 and association with cardiovascular events: The ARIC Study

Journal of the American Heart Association Jul 10, 2020

Aguilar D, Sun C, Hoogeveen RC, et al. - Among ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) participants without cardiovascular disease, this inquiry was performed to examine links between plasma galectin‐3 concentrations and incident coronary heart disease, ischemic stroke, heart failure (HF) hospitalization and total mortality, when measured at midlife and remeasured ≈15 years later. This was investigated among participants at ARIC visit 4 (1996–1998; n = 9,247) and at ARIC visit 5 (2011–2013; n = 4,829). At visit 4 (median age 62), higher galectin‐3 level was found to be independently related to incident coronary heart disease, ischemic stroke, HF, and death. A link of higher galectin‐3 level with incident HF and total mortality, but not coronary heart disease or stoke, was identified at visit 5 (median age, 74). Overall, an increased risk of cardiovascular events was observed, in a large and biracial community‐based cohort, in correlation with galectin‐3 measured at midlife and older age. A rise in galectin‐3 concentrations over this period was also shown to be related to raised risk.
