Perioperative, functional and early oncologic outcomes of salvage robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy after high-intensity focused ultrasound partial ablation

BMC Urology Jul 05, 2020

Thompson JE, Sridhar AN, Shaw G, et al. - This retrospective analysis of a prospective database was performed to determine peri-operative safety, functional as well as early oncologic results after salvage robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (sRARP) for local recurrence following partial ablation of the prostate using high-intensity focussed ultrasound (HIFU-PA), which is a treatment choice for localised prostate cancer. Of 53 consecutive men who had sRARP following HIFU-PA from 2012 to 2018, 45 eligible men with sufficient data were included. Findings revealed the safety of performing salvage RARP in the given patient population, and salvage RARP was shown to afford acceptable but sub-optimal continence and poor sexual-function and poor oncologic outcomes. Additional treatment within 12-months was needed in one in three men.
