Impact of chronic liver disease on outcomes of hospitalized patients with COVID‐19: A multicenter US experience

Liver International Jul 05, 2020

Hashemi N, Viveiros K, Redd WD, et al. - This multi‐center retrospective analysis was performed among hospitalized adults with laboratory‐verified COVID‐19, to determine how chronic liver disease (CLD) could influence relevant clinical outcomes in these patients. This study included 363 patients, of those, CLD was present in 19%, including NAFLD in 15.2%. Longer length of stay was reported in patients with CLD. An independent link of CLD and NAFLD with ICU admission and mechanical ventilation was revealed after controlling for age, gender, obesity, cardiac diseases, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and pulmonary disorders. Death was predicted independently by the presence of cirrhosis. Overall, findings revealed the presence of CLD in approximately one‐fifth of hospitalized COVID‐19 patients. More critical illness was observed in these patients in correlation with the presence of CLD.
