Association between ceramides and coronary artery stenosis in patients with coronary artery disease

Lipids in Health and Disease Jul 01, 2020

Tu C, Xie L, Wang Z, et al. - Among 553 patients with definite or suspected coronary artery disease (CAD), this inquiry was undertaken to determine the link between certain ceramide species, coronary artery stenosis and acute coronary syndrome. Four groups of patients were defined based on coronary artery stenosis severity. Four plasma ceramide species, namely, Cer (d18:1/16:0), Cer (d18:1/18:0), Cer (d18:1/24:1), Cer (d18:1/24:0), were measured. By applying multiple logistic regression, the prognostic model for the prediction of acute coronary syndrome risk was established. In this study, the severity of coronary artery stenosis was shown to be related to high ratio of Cer (d18:1/24:1) to Cer (d18:1/24:0), female gender, hemoglobin A1c% and acute myocardial infarction. Although a good discrimination was displayed by the reported prognostic model, further inquiry on long term MACE (major adverse cardiavascular and cerebrovascular) is required to assess the role of ceramide for the prediction of MACE risk.
